in calling for reconciliation and peace

to overcome the warring hostilities

that plague and divide our globe.

We see people genuflect hurriedly before a manger scene

in a department store window.

We attend office parties filled with merriment,

and we feel something stir in our beings,

and we wonder if it is love and hope.

On the other hand,

we wonder if in our attempts to celebrate,

we're covering up the world's darkness.

And we ask ourselves

why our interest in peace and reconciliation

is so keen just now

and not so keen at other times of the year.

We need your wisdom, O God,

to know that celebrating Christ's birth

never justifies ignoring the world's sin.

We need your wisdom to know that we celebrate

that Christ came in spite of the world's darkness

and not to hide it from our eyes.

We need your wisdom to know that our feeble attempts

to get in the spirit, as we say,

will not cause any fewer children to die for lack of food,

will not bring blacks in southern Africa

any closer to liberation,

will not halt oppression around our globe,

will not ease the plight of the homeless

and poor and lonely in America

and in this very city,

will not reverse the momentum of nuclear arms production,

will not end the exploitation

of the world's human and natural resources.

For all the world's darkness tonight,
