| May the spirit of Christ be in our minds | 38:21 | |
| to enlighten and illumine our every thought and word. | 38:23 | |
| May the spirit of Christ be in our very souls | 38:28 | |
| to give us the fullness and the joy of the grace of God. | 38:31 | |
| We gather this night to celebrate a word of hope, | 38:36 | |
| hope from God that brings light to our darkness, | 38:40 | |
| joy to our sorrow, | 38:44 | |
| freedom to our bondage, | 38:46 | |
| release to those in captivity, | 38:49 | |
| light in the midst of death, | 38:52 | |
| promise to our uncertainty, | 38:54 | |
| hope that assures us | 38:57 | |
| that we are loved with an everlasting love. | 38:59 | |
| The word tonight, my dear friends in Christ, | 39:03 | |
| is that God is in us, | 39:06 | |
| is with us, | 39:09 | |
| and among us, | 39:10 | |

| Tonight, O God, while we come with thankful hearts, | 40:49 | |
| we also come before you caught up in two worlds | 40:53 | |
| and not quite knowing whether to feel good about that fact | 40:57 | |
| and celebrate it | 41:01 | |
| or to feel guilty because we're not sure | 41:02 | |
| all of our allegiance is to you. | 41:05 | |
| We need your wisdom to guide us and free us | 41:08 | |
| from our dilemma. | 41:11 | |
| We find ourselves caught up excitedly | 41:14 | |
| in the glitter, glamor, and glee of the season. | 41:16 | |
| We overlook animosities | 41:20 | |
| that have existed the rest of the year. | 41:22 | |
| We see newspaper editors joining with pastors | 41:25 | |
| in calling for reconciliation and peace | 41:28 | |
| to overcome the warring hostilities | 41:31 | |
| that plague and divide our globe. | 41:33 | |
| We see people genuflect hurriedly before a manger scene | 41:36 | |
| in a department store window. | 41:40 | |
| We attend office parties filled with merriment, | 41:42 | |
| and we feel something stir in our beings, | 41:46 | |
| and we wonder if it is love and hope. | 41:49 | |
| On the other hand, | 41:55 | |
| we wonder if in our attempts to celebrate, | 41:56 | |
| we're covering up the world's darkness. | 41:59 | |
| And we ask ourselves | 42:03 | |
| why our interest in peace and reconciliation | 42:04 | |
| is so keen just now | 42:07 | |
| and not so keen at other times of the year. | 42:10 | |
| We need your wisdom, O God, | 42:14 | |
| to know that celebrating Christ's birth | 42:16 | |
| never justifies ignoring the world's sin. | 42:19 | |
| We need your wisdom to know that we celebrate | 42:23 | |
| that Christ came in spite of the world's darkness | 42:26 | |
| and not to hide it from our eyes. | 42:30 | |
| We need your wisdom to know that our feeble attempts | 42:34 | |
| to get in the spirit, as we say, | 42:38 | |
| will not cause any fewer children to die for lack of food, | 42:41 | |
| will not bring blacks in southern Africa | 42:46 | |
| any closer to liberation, | 42:48 | |
| will not halt oppression around our globe, | 42:51 | |
| will not ease the plight of the homeless | 42:54 | |
| and poor and lonely in America | 42:56 | |
| and in this very city, | 42:59 | |
| will not reverse the momentum of nuclear arms production, | 43:01 | |
| will not end the exploitation | 43:06 | |
| of the world's human and natural resources. | 43:08 | |
| For all the world's darkness tonight, | 43:12 | |
| we lift our prayers, | 43:14 | |
| and we pray that we may be able to enter into that darkness | 43:16 | |
| and give all of our lives, | 43:20 | |
| not just our feeble attempts, | 43:22 | |
| for the purpose of your kingdom, | 43:25 | |
| for your justice, and for your peace. | 43:27 | |
| We pray too | 43:32 | |
| that we have not placed the hope for the world | 43:33 | |
| in ourselves, our nation, or our culture, | 43:36 | |
| but in you and your gift of love. | 43:40 | |
| And so tonight, | 43:44 | |
| we pray not only for wisdom, | 43:46 | |
| but for innocence in our lives, | 43:49 | |
| the innocence born with the babe in Bethlehem | 43:53 | |
| that embraces wisdom and knows that our source of hope | 43:57 | |
| is in the one who calls us | 44:00 | |
| as individuals, as a church, | 44:03 | |
| as nations, and as cultures into judgment, | 44:06 | |
| the innocence that causes us to place our trust | 44:10 | |
| in the love that was born for us in that babe, | 44:13 | |
| the innocence that calls us to joy | 44:17 | |
| drawn from a certainty of hope | 44:19 | |
| that the babe born in Bethlehem is sovereign over our world | 44:21 | |
| and overcame and overcomes its darkness, | 44:26 | |
| the innocence that calls us together | 44:30 | |
| and brings us home. | 44:33 | |
| It is in that trust and joy which we're learning | 44:36 | |
| that we offer prayers tonight | 44:39 | |
| for your church, the world, and ourselves. | 44:40 | |
| Bring your healing to those sick in body, mind, and spirit. | 44:46 | |
| Bring your comfort to the dying and those who grieve. | 44:50 | |
| Bring your presence to the lonely. | 44:54 | |
| May those who know joy multiply their joy in you. | 44:57 | |
| We especially lift up tonight | 45:03 | |
| the hostages in Iran and the families who wait for them. | 45:05 | |
| We pray for all those who work for their release, | 45:09 | |
| both diplomats and clergy. | 45:13 | |
| We also pray for their captors. | 45:16 | |
| May they be merciful and loving and freeing. | 45:19 | |
| And O God, we believe your promise is always before us, | 45:25 | |
| and joy and celebration arise in us | 45:29 | |
