About the Digital Collection

Collection contains family correspondence of Margaret Stockton Carmichael, largely dating from before her marriage to William W. Carmichael in May 1870. Includes letters from school classmates and friends at the Concord Female College, as well as Civil War letters. Following the war William Carmichael moved to Abilene, Kansas, to engage in the cattle business; the bulk of the correspondence is from him to Margaret during their courtship. Additional letters from 1871 document a visit back to Statesville following her marriage.
