Maria Buttner letter

About the Digital Collection

Letter to her brother, Albert T.J. Buttner in Whiteville, N.C. Topics include agriculture, family news, a Jewish wedding, and an election of 1852. Buttner made particularly interesting comments comparing the repression of women and slaves: "I always take it for granted that people who have such 'glass cupboard['] reasons are great advocates for slavery, either of women or negroes; for it seems as though we were considered in the same light, by some great souled people ..."
