General Carr's claim on senatorship

Endorsement for Julian S. Carr's run to succeed Senator Butler for U.S. Senate, from Confederate Colonel John R. Lane, reprinted from the Raleigh News and Observer, Sept. 9, 1900. Lane, "the Colonel of the famous 26th Regiment which sustained the heaviest loss at the Battle of Gettysburg of any regiment in the annals of war...", appeals to "the Confederate veterans of North Carolina" to support Carr as "he served as a private in Lee's army" and "since that fateful day at Appomatox he has been content to serve the State which we all devotedly love...", and has "never faltered in his devotion to the welfare of the Confederate soldier", including his support of The Soldiers' Home at Raleigh.
