Anti-Tobacco "Pipe and Poverty"

Two-sided circular letter titled "Pipe and Poverty" is an anti-tobacco tract in which the author connects the act of smoking with poverty. He states that smokers spend so much money on cigars, chewed tobacco, and pipes that they cannot afford to take care of their families. He further states that tobacco is the "cause of much physical and intellectual evil." He largely seeks an audience of young men "starting in life (as the author did) with little or not means, and dependent on their industry, economy and the blessing of God."
