To the democracy of the border states

3-page impassioned plea from M.H.W. to the "Democrats of the Border States" whose rallying cry should be "...our religion, our liberty, and our Constitutional rights--the Southern States as a unit!" Mentions President Lincoln and Congress overstepping their Constitutional powers by encroaching on freedom of the press, and that members of Congress should be supporting the return of fugitive slaves to owners, not working to emancipate slaves in the slave-holding states. Also mentions the Supreme Court's "illegal" suspension of the writ of Habeas Corpus and the shooting of a political prisoner named "Mr. Wharton" [Jesse Wharton] who dared to speak against the "political demagogues and abolitionists at Washington".
