  • Open letter from George B. Loring, U.S. congressman from Massachusetts, to editor of the Boston Journal. Concerning Swampscott riot, in which George W. Stone, publicly rejoicing over assassination of Abraham Lincoln, was tarred and feathered by a crowd. Loring condemns recent decision by state to prosecute Stone's attackers criminally. Dated Feb. 19, 1866.
