Circular letter with recruiting instructions for officers of the 2 battalions (the Rothsay and Caithness Fencibles ) commanded by Sir John Sinclair , Baronet. Some of the instructions include: enlist men between 16 and 45 years of age, all men will be recruited as private soldiers, not as officers or non-commissioned officers, previous recruitment the men have to undergo a strict medical examination, each recruit must purchase, out of his own pocket a series of clothing, materials (list annexed),etc. The two battalions of the Rothsay and Caithness Fencibles (1794 and 1795) were raised after letters of service were granted to Sir John Sinclair of Ulster, to raise a fencible regiment of Scottish Highlanders, whose services should extend to England. This regiment was assembled at Inverness in October, 1794. The corps attracted particular notice from the majestic stature of the officers, nineteen of whom averaged 6 feet (1.8 m)in height. This battalion was disbanded in 1799.
