Summary: Letter most likely from Aaron Manby addressed to "Mrs. Manby at Mr. Joseph Lane, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire". The letter begins by referencing Manby's earlier correspondence dating "2 July ... wherein I mentioned our unhappy situation since then the whole island have been and are now under arms; marshal [sic] law was proclaimed" because of the slave rebellion beginning in the "parish of Hannover [sic]". Manby then discusses the "Jew Company" and whether it "is possible to make a good Jew soldier". He concludes by sending well wishes to "my dear Janny" and his hopes to be reunited soon.
Aaron Manby was born in Yorkshire and spent much of his life in Kingston, Jamaica. He was an enslaver. In 1772, Manby married Jane Lane. Together, they had two children, including Aaron Manby, the British ironmaster and engineer. Manby, Sr. fought in the Siege of Savannah for the British. He died of injuries incurred during the Siege in Savannah on November 13, 1779.
