Summary: Caroline County warrants related to Eldrid, "a negro man slave the property of John White of the county of Hanover". In a warrant dated "the 31st day of December, 1829", signed by G.D. Baylor, "J.P" of Caroline County, Philip Boulware swears that Eldrid "was taken by him on the 31st day of December, 1829" and that he was "taken at the gate near the house of Mr. Malone". A "P.S." notes that the "fee for apprehending a slave is five dollars". A subsequent warrant dated January 4, 1830, signed by Pichegru Woolfolk "command[s]" the constable, Wm. G. Maury, "in the name of the Commonwealth to convey and deliver into the custody of the said keeper of the said jail the body of Eldrid ... charged before me [Woolfolk] with feloniously, willfully, and maliciously setting fire to and burning the public jail of the county aforesaid [Caroline?]". The final warrant dated March 19, 1830, signed by John Ford states that was "received ... of William S. Royston, the jailor of Caroline County the body of Eldrid a slave sentenced [crossed out] by order of John Floyd governor of Virginia".
John White cannot be positively identified as there were multiple enslavers with that name living in Virginia in 1830.
Title devised by cataloger.
Originally cataloged together with seven other items under title: Notes to the Caroline County Jailer asking him to take slaves into custody, slaves named: Adam, Randal, Walker, Jim, and Eldrid.
