In manuscript and printed text is described the free status of James De Hart "a black man ... about thirty seven years, and was born at Hackensack in the state of New Jersey ... and that the said James hath been reputed and considered to be free ... and that the said James became free in or before the year eighteen hundred & eight."

Certification made, sworn, and marked by Thomas Blake, of the fifth ward of New York.
