Summary: Copy of Nelson County Court reports related to the re-enslavement of "a runaway slave a negro boy calling himself George. He is about 14 or 15 years of age, 5 feet 2 or 3 inches high, dark copper color, says he belongs to John Anderson living near Nashville Tennessee". George was "advertised as required by law one month from the 25th of December 1863" in the Commonwealth. The Nelson County Court then ordered George to be sold at the court house in March 1864. An appraisal of George for "one hundred and fifty-dollar" is dated March 14th, 1864 and signed: Jack Queen, Lewis Ritchie. "William Sisco became the purchaser at his bid of two hundred and forty dollars being the highest and best bid offered". The bill of sale is included. "A copy attest" John S. Beard clk.
Formerly known as: Court documents relating to the sale of runaway slave: George, belonging to John Anderson of Nashville, Tenn., Nelson County, Ky.
John Anderson cannot be precisely identified as there were multiple people with that name living in Tennessee during this time period.
