Adair County Court reports related to the re-enslavement of Edmund, a self-emancipated man, 1865-1866 :manuscript.

Summary: Adair County Court report attested to by J.W. Butler on January 10, 1865 regarding "Edmund a runaway slave who was committed to jail according to law for the period of one month & that said slave has not been claimed by the master or owner". William T. Smyth, jaler of Adair County, reported that he advertised Edmund in the Frankfort Commonwealth. The Adair County Court "ordered that Young E. Hurt sell said slave Edmund at the courthouse in Columbia on the first Monday in February that being county court day to the highest bidder". An appraisal for Edmund is included and signed by J.H. Reynolds and Geo. R. Page. William T. Smyth purchased Edmund for "four hundred dollars" on February 1, 1864. Calculations dating from 1865 through 1866 related to the cost of re-enslaving Edmund are written in red and black ink.
