Summary: Warren County Court reports related to the sale of a "Negro slave named Charles belonging to William Ramsey of Warren County, Tennessee, aged 16 years, five feet 6 inches high, copper color and weight about 150 pounds." Charles was "committed to the jail of said county [Warren County] as a runaway on slave in the 24th day of October 1862"; Charles was advertised by order of the Court; he was subsequently sold to and re-enslaved by Harvey Dishman for the "sum of five hundred & twenty five dollars" on May 11, 1863. The bill of sale associated with the re-enslavement of Charles is included; sale overwritten by separate hand in red ink related to the proceeds ($386.59) of the sale.
Title devised by cataloger.
William Ramsey cannot be precisely identified because there were two William Ramseys (one born in 1832; the other 1823) living in Warren County, Tennessee in the 1860s.
Formerly known as: Bill of sale for one slave boy: Charles, 16 y.o., Warren County, Ky.
All reports signed: A copy attest James H. Rose clerk.
There are two red internal revenue stamps ("Int. Rev. Agreement") with portrait of George Washington and the number 5; initialed "J.H.R [James H. Rose]" and dated.
