Summary: Lease agreement for the rental of Cly Kees, an enslaved man, between Joseph Trout and an unknown enslaver whose name is excised from the document. The agreement states that "on or before the twenty fifth of Dec. 25th [sic] 1862" Joseph Trout promises "to pay for the hire of col man Cly Kees ninety dollars for the year". Trout was to provide "the usual clothes given". The agreement is signed by Trout and dated January 1, 1862. A postscript notes that the enslaver received payment from Trout on "1862 Oct. 8". There was a Clay Keys living in Virginia according to the 1870 and 1880 United States Censuses. Unable to confirm whether Cly Kees and Clay Keys are the same individual.
