  • Summary: Lease agreement between J.F. Torrance and "Nathans & Thrasher" dated January 1st, 1861, for the rental of Jemmy, an enslaved man. Nathans and Thrasher "promise to pay to J.F. Torrance on order fife [sic] hundred dollars, it being for the hire of [Torrance's] Negro man Jemy, for the present year A.D. 1861". They also "bind [themselves] to furnish said Negro with three sets of clothing, 2 pairs of shoes, one hat, and blanket. [They] also agree to pay his taxes and loose his time while sick". Recto signed by Nathans and Thrasher with seal. Verso lists recurring payments made on April 4, 1861, June 6, 1861, and April 4, 1862.
