Life insurance policy for Mary, a 34-year-old enslaved woman, issued by the Charter Oak Life Insurance Company Stock Department Agency for Bertha Byck, a resident of Savannah, Ga. The policy insured Mary for $600 for 12 months at an annual premium of $18.00. Byck's application was a renewal, and she filed it on May 19th, 1860; a payment of $20 ($18 premium + $2 in additional charges) was received by the insurance company on May 26, 1860. Mary was valued at "$600". Charter Oak Life Insurance Company lists her "occupation" as "house servant", but she is described as a "slave" in other areas of the policy.
