George C. Mendenhall letter to Martha Moore, 1825 June 14 :autograph manuscript signed.

Summary: Letter from George C. Mendenhall to Martha Moore discussing "a certain method of effectually emancipating [Martha Moore's] slaves". Mendenhall advises he "know[s] of no way that [Moore] can insure to [the people enslaved by Moore] their freedom by will". Instead, he states that Moore can "employ an agent and give him a power of [attorney?] to convey them to Ohio or Indiana state". Doing this will allow "them a greater degree of liberty than free persons can by our law enjoy in North Carolina". He also states that "it might be well for their security that it should be done as early a period as practical". The opinion of Jeremiah Hubbard is included as a postcript to Mendenhall's letter.
