Letters from Hinshaw to his wife after he was drafted into the 6th North Carolina Infantry, C.S.A., expressing his opposition to military service; and 1870s letters to relatives in Kansas discussing opportunities for advancement and social customs in that state. Also, 1880s letters of Joseph W. Hinshaw, Maben's son, describing labor conditions and agricultural practices in Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and Texas, as he passed through as a traveling salesman for a tree and plant nursery.
Biographical sketch of creators: Maben Hinshaw (also spelled Mebane or Maban Hinshaw) was a Quaker and conscientious objector who was drafted into the Confederate Army, originally from Randleman, Randolph County, N.C. He was married to Mary Lunda Hinshaw (1835-1898) and the couple had at least 6 children.
