Robert O. Leinster papers, 1840-1864

Collection contains a few letters of Hugh Kelly, physician; letters of R.O. Linster, a clerk in the 4th Regiment, North Carolina States Troops, during the Civil War; postwar love letters from Linster to Cornelia, the daughter of Hugh Kelly, whom he later married; and papers of their son, Roy L., Leinster during his military career. There are also several anonymous poems concerning the activities of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Some pre-war materials include a manuscript booklet of recipes and stock share receipts for Kelly's investment in the Western North Carolina Rail Road Company.

Biographical Sketch of Creators:
Robert Osborne Leinster was a white Confederate soldier, member of the 4th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry; from Statesville (Iredell Co.), N.C. He also spelled his name as "R.O. Linster." His wife was Cornelia Elizabeth Leinster. The couple had at least seven children, including Roy Luttrell Leinster, who served in the Spanish-American War and as adjutant general in the North Carolina National Guard.
