- It is disappointing that we're, as we sit here in June of 2010, that we've still had three trials in the history of Guantanamo. As we've mentioned, David Hicks got a nine-month sentence, essentially a misdemeanor punishment. Salim Hamdan effectively got a 5 1/2-month sentence. You've got 180 people that are locked up at Guantanamo that have never faced trial. You've got two people that have been convicted as war criminals that are free men. So kinda the running joke was, in order to win at GTMO, you gotta lose. And you have to go to court and lose and be convicted as a war criminal and you might get to go home. Or you can never face trial and be locked up indefinitely.
