00:01.000 --> 00:28.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. Your father would, oh, let me just say one thing. I'm going to just do that thing again. Just, this is Kate Ellis interviewing Emily Willette McCandies on June 8th, 1994. This is tape two. Okay. You were just telling me about what your father, he raised tobacco?

2
00:28.000 --> 01:35.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Tobacco, corn, and wheat in his gardens. At the time then, when I was a little girl, they didn't have what you call deep freezers to put your food in. My mother would can all the vegetables. They even had cows for milk and butter. They had yard chickens for eggs. My mother done all canning. She canned all the vegetables, the hog meat. They would cure it out at home. The sausage, my mother would can it and they would even make bags to stuff sausage in and sometime they would sell some of their hog meat.

3
01:35.000 --> 01:40.000
<v Kate Ellis>They largely lived off of what they produced themselves.

4
01:40.000 --> 01:40.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Right.

5
01:40.000 --> 01:46.000
<v Kate Ellis>I see. There wasn't a lot of trading or selling?

6
01:46.000 --> 01:46.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>No.

7
01:46.000 --> 01:49.000
<v Kate Ellis>Oh, okay.

8
01:49.000 --> 02:28.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>I think when I was too young to remember, I think they would do trading milk and butter or eggs for something, maybe like a hand. I was told when I was a baby, they had stamps that you had to buy shoes with. Stamps to get sugar, stamps to buy gas to go in the car.

9
02:28.000 --> 02:30.000
<v Kate Ellis>This is what they had?

10
02:30.000 --> 02:33.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Yes, but that I was too young to remember that.

11
02:33.000 --> 02:38.000
<v Kate Ellis>I see. Right. That was really early on in your life.

12
02:38.000 --> 02:43.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Right.

13
02:43.000 --> 02:52.000
<v Kate Ellis>Well, why don't we move on to the forms then since it looks like we've been talking for about an hour and a half.

14
02:52.000 --> 02:54.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Okay.

15
02:54.000 --> 03:10.000
<v Kate Ellis>This will take us a bit longer to do, and if you think of anything that I don't know I haven't asked you that seems pertinent to what we've been talking about, let me know.

16
03:10.000 --> 03:15.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Okay.

17
03:15.000 --> 03:37.000
<v Kate Ellis>Some of this stuff I'll just fill in as we go along. Still have glasses on. What is your date of birth?

18
03:37.000 --> 03:44.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Fourth month, fifth day, 36.

19
03:44.000 --> 03:55.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay, perfect. Your place of birth, the city was?

20
03:55.000 --> 04:01.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Cedar Grove.

21
04:01.000 --> 04:02.000
<v Kate Ellis>Were you born at home?

22
04:02.000 --> 04:12.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>That's in Orange County. At home.

23
04:12.000 --> 04:14.000
<v Kate Ellis>North Carolina?

24
04:14.000 --> 04:19.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Right.

25
04:19.000 --> 04:34.000
<v Kate Ellis>What have been the principle occupations, the main places that you've worked in your life? What would number one be?

26
04:34.000 --> 04:36.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Babysitting.

27
04:36.000 --> 04:46.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. Let me just make sure. The number one thing, I mean the primary one wouldn't be housekeeping at Duke? No.

28
04:46.000 --> 04:49.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>No.

29
04:49.000 --> 04:54.000
<v Kate Ellis>This was the one that was most important. I guess that's what I mean. What were the most important occupations.

30
04:54.000 --> 04:58.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>When I first started out working was babysitting.

31
04:58.000 --> 05:01.000
<v Kate Ellis>Right.

32
05:01.000 --> 05:19.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Working at the restaurant here in Hillsborough and from there I worked a short while in Chapel Hill working with a private patient.

33
05:19.000 --> 05:37.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. I think what they're asking, what this is asking isn't what the first one was or the second one, but what have been the most important ones?

34
05:37.000 --> 05:38.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>The nursing home.

35
05:38.000 --> 06:15.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. You were an assistant to a physical therapist?

36
06:15.000 --> 06:15.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Uh huh.

37
06:15.000 --> 06:22.000
<v Kate Ellis>Assistant to physical therapist in nursing home. Then what will be the second most important or job that you've had or place that you've worked?

38
06:22.000 --> 06:25.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Duke University.

39
06:25.000 --> 06:30.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. What do you call your job?

40
06:30.000 --> 06:31.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Housekeeping.

41
06:31.000 --> 06:47.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. What about the third most important?

42
06:47.000 --> 07:05.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Let me see. I worked as a nurse's assistant too, at the nursing home.

43
07:05.000 --> 07:06.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. That would be the third for most important?

44
07:06.000 --> 07:09.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Mm-hmm.

45
07:09.000 --> 07:10.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. At that same nursing home?

46
07:10.000 --> 07:10.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Uh huh.

47
07:10.000 --> 08:23.000
<v Kate Ellis>Nursing home. Okay. Where is my pen? Think this pen is dead. Guess I can use the blue one still. Okay. Your maiden name is McCandies. Okay. How would you like your name to appear in written materials? Starting with your first name and if you have a nickname or how would you like your name to appear exactly?

48
08:23.000 --> 08:23.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Emily Willette.

49
08:23.000 --> 08:23.000
<v Kate Ellis>McCandies?

50
08:23.000 --> 08:43.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Right.

51
08:43.000 --> 08:56.000
<v Kate Ellis>Just go like that. Okay. Your date of birth is?

52
08:56.000 --> 09:01.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Fourth, fifth 36.

53
09:01.000 --> 09:03.000
<v Kate Ellis>Again, it was Cedar?

54
09:03.000 --> 09:05.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Grove.

55
09:05.000 --> 09:10.000
<v Kate Ellis>Grove.

56
09:10.000 --> 09:14.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Orange.

57
09:14.000 --> 09:23.000
<v Kate Ellis>Let me see. Are you currently single, married, divorced, widowed?

58
09:23.000 --> 09:26.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Divorced.

59
09:26.000 --> 09:39.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. Now this is about your parents, your mother's name?

60
09:39.000 --> 09:47.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>You want my real mother or the parents that raised me?

61
09:47.000 --> 09:57.000
<v Kate Ellis>I guess I would say in a sense, I would say whoever you feel closest to as your parents. I mean, it sounds like—

62
09:57.000 --> 09:59.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>I would think it would be the parents that raised me.

63
09:59.000 --> 10:01.000
<v Kate Ellis>Why don't we say that then?

64
10:01.000 --> 10:02.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Okay. Johnnie.

65
10:02.000 --> 10:05.000
<v Kate Ellis>Johnnie? Is that J-O-H?

66
10:05.000 --> 10:08.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>N-N-I-E.

67
10:08.000 --> 10:09.000
<v Kate Ellis>This is your mother.

68
10:09.000 --> 10:13.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>That's my father. Oh. Mother's name.

69
10:13.000 --> 10:16.000
<v Kate Ellis>Some mother's names, I mean, some women do have the names.

70
10:16.000 --> 10:17.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Right.

71
10:17.000 --> 10:19.000
<v Kate Ellis>Let me just write that while I remember. Okay. Your mother's name?

72
10:19.000 --> 10:20.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Katie.

73
10:20.000 --> 10:22.000
<v Kate Ellis>Oh really? Is that K-A-T?

74
10:22.000 --> 10:24.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>I-E.

75
10:24.000 --> 10:28.000
<v Kate Ellis>That's how I spell my name. Katie.

76
10:28.000 --> 10:31.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>May McCandies.

77
10:31.000 --> 10:39.000
<v Kate Ellis>It's a nice name if I do say so myself. Do you know her maiden name?

78
10:39.000 --> 10:41.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Compton.

79
10:41.000 --> 10:43.000
<v Kate Ellis>C-O-M-P-T-O-N?

80
10:43.000 --> 10:47.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Right.

81
10:47.000 --> 10:49.000
<v Kate Ellis>what's her date of birth?

82
10:49.000 --> 10:50.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>What's her date?

83
10:50.000 --> 10:55.000
<v Kate Ellis>Of birth.

84
10:55.000 --> 10:58.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>She was 85 years old when she died.

85
10:58.000 --> 11:01.000
<v Kate Ellis>When did she die?

86
11:01.000 --> 11:12.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Oh, the 24th of October in 85.

87
11:12.000 --> 11:17.000
<v Kate Ellis>In 1985 so she was born in 1900, I guess.

88
11:17.000 --> 11:18.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Right.

89
11:18.000 --> 11:21.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. You don't know when she was born in 1900?

90
11:21.000 --> 11:26.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>No, I don't.

91
11:26.000 --> 11:28.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. Do you know where she was born? Her place of birth?

92
11:28.000 --> 11:34.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>I think it was Caswell County.

93
11:34.000 --> 11:36.000
<v Kate Ellis>Caswell. Is that C-A-S-W?

94
11:36.000 --> 11:41.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>W-E-L-L.

95
11:41.000 --> 11:42.000
<v Kate Ellis>North Carolina.

96
11:42.000 --> 11:42.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Right.

97
11:42.000 --> 11:49.000
<v Kate Ellis>You don't know the town?

98
11:49.000 --> 11:50.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Prospect Hill.

99
11:50.000 --> 12:01.000
<v Kate Ellis>It's Prospect Hill. Okay. What was her occupation?

100
12:01.000 --> 12:09.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Housewife and farming.

101
12:09.000 --> 12:18.000
<v Kate Ellis>And farmer. You mentioned that she helped people in their homes sometimes?

102
12:18.000 --> 12:34.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>That was like when the ladies had babies, she would go and she was what? A midwife.

103
12:34.000 --> 12:41.000
<v Kate Ellis>Oh really? That's that's neat. Wow. Housewife and farmer. Can I put down and midwife? Does that sound?

104
12:41.000 --> 12:44.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Mm-hmm.

105
12:44.000 --> 12:48.000
<v Kate Ellis>She helped as a midwife in your community.

106
12:48.000 --> 12:49.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Right.

107
12:49.000 --> 12:53.000
<v Kate Ellis>Wow. I bet a lot of people felt attached to her.

108
12:53.000 --> 12:56.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>They did. A lot of people know her.

109
12:56.000 --> 12:59.000
<v Kate Ellis>Really? Was she well-respected?

110
12:59.000 --> 13:11.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>She was. Then after she retired and a little while before she kept foster children too.

111
13:11.000 --> 13:19.000
<v Kate Ellis>Oh, did she? Wow. Okay. Your father's name, Johnnie?

112
13:19.000 --> 13:22.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Johnnie McCandies.

113
13:22.000 --> 13:23.000
<v Kate Ellis>Did he have a middle name?

114
13:23.000 --> 13:26.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>I don't think so.

115
13:26.000 --> 13:38.000
<v Kate Ellis>I don't have a middle name which surprises people sometimes. Don't know why. Do you know his date of birth?

116
13:38.000 --> 13:46.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>No, I don't. His was in 1900s too. He was 85 when he died.

117
13:46.000 --> 13:47.000
<v Kate Ellis>He died?

118
13:47.000 --> 13:52.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>In 83. 1983.

119
13:52.000 --> 13:56.000
<v Kate Ellis>He was 85. So he was born in 1898?

120
13:56.000 --> 13:56.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Yeah.

121
13:56.000 --> 13:57.000
<v Kate Ellis>I think that's—

122
13:57.000 --> 14:01.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Yeah, that's it.

123
14:01.000 --> 14:07.000
<v Kate Ellis>If he was 85 when he died. Okay. Do you remember when he died?

124
14:07.000 --> 14:12.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>He died July, I think it was July the 20th.

125
14:12.000 --> 14:23.000
<v Kate Ellis>1983. Where was he born?

126
14:23.000 --> 14:43.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>He was born in Caswell County too. Prospect Hill.

127
14:43.000 --> 14:45.000
<v Kate Ellis>His occupation?

128
14:45.000 --> 14:52.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Farming.

129
14:52.000 --> 15:02.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. Can I have the full name of your brothers and sisters?

130
15:02.000 --> 15:09.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Okay. I'll start with my oldest brother.

131
15:09.000 --> 15:10.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay.

132
15:10.000 --> 15:22.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Melvin Ray Chrisp.

133
15:22.000 --> 15:24.000
<v Kate Ellis>Melvin Ray Chrisp.

134
15:24.000 --> 15:27.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>We were half brother and sister.

135
15:27.000 --> 15:34.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. Half brother and sister. He was—

136
15:34.000 --> 15:36.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>My mother had him out of wedlock.

137
15:36.000 --> 15:44.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. Okay. What was his last name?

138
15:44.000 --> 15:45.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>My brother?

139
15:45.000 --> 15:46.000
<v Kate Ellis>His last name was?

140
15:46.000 --> 15:46.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Chrisp.

141
15:46.000 --> 15:49.000
<v Kate Ellis>Oh, it was. K-H? I mean C-H-R?

142
15:49.000 --> 15:51.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>C-H-R-I-S-P.

143
15:51.000 --> 16:02.000
<v Kate Ellis>Oh, S-P. I didn't get Chrisp. Okay. Melvin Ray Chrisp. He's your oldest brother. I'll put one here because I want, okay, so firstborn.

144
16:02.000 --> 16:08.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Okay. He's deceased.

145
16:08.000 --> 16:13.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. Do you remember when he was born?

146
16:13.000 --> 16:16.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>No, I don't.

147
16:16.000 --> 16:21.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. Do you remember how old he was when he died?

148
16:21.000 --> 16:27.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>He was somewhere like 50. He was in his fifties.

149
16:27.000 --> 16:27.000
<v Kate Ellis>He died?

150
16:27.000 --> 16:29.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>I think he was about 53.

151
16:29.000 --> 16:32.000
<v Kate Ellis>Do you remember when he died?

152
16:32.000 --> 16:34.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>He died in 1969.

153
16:34.000 --> 16:40.000
<v Kate Ellis>Do you know how he died?

154
16:40.000 --> 16:40.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Heart attack.

155
16:40.000 --> 16:52.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. Maybe he was born, I'm going to say the 1910 or something.

156
16:52.000 --> 16:53.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Probably.

157
16:53.000 --> 16:54.000
<v Kate Ellis>Was in his fifties and

158
16:54.000 --> 16:54.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>He died in 69,

159
16:54.000 --> 17:03.000
<v Kate Ellis>Maybe 19 teens. Okay. I'll just say, I'll put a question mark by that one.

160
17:03.000 --> 17:07.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Probably 19 in the early, probably in the twenties.

161
17:07.000 --> 17:14.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. I'll say—

162
17:14.000 --> 17:24.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Or early thirties.

163
17:24.000 --> 17:28.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. I'll say 1920s. Do you remember where he was born?

164
17:28.000 --> 17:38.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>I think he was born in Orange County.

165
17:38.000 --> 17:50.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. I'm going to put here, let's put half brother. Okay.

166
17:50.000 --> 17:52.000

171
18:11.000 --> 18:12.000
<v Kate Ellis>Is he still alive?

172
18:12.000 --> 18:15.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Uh huh.

173
18:15.000 --> 18:17.000
<v Kate Ellis>Would you guess he was born in, how old is he now?

174
18:17.000 --> 18:19.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>He's 61.

175
18:19.000 --> 18:31.000
<v Kate Ellis>So, 1920, 1923. We're in '94. Oh no, '33.

180
18:48.000 --> 18:50.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Half.

181
18:50.000 --> 18:52.000
<v Kate Ellis>He's a half brother by your mother as well?

182
18:52.000 --> 19:02.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Uh huh. I'm next.

183
19:02.000 --> 19:08.000
<v Kate Ellis>That's you. Okay. Then go ahead.

184
19:08.000 --> 19:09.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>My sister?

185
19:09.000 --> 19:12.000
<v Kate Ellis>Yeah, the next one down.

186
19:12.000 --> 19:15.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Okay, so you don't need me.

187
19:15.000 --> 19:16.000
<v Kate Ellis>I don't need you. It's just your sisters and brothers.

188
19:16.000 --> 19:18.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Okay. Annie Pearl.

189
19:18.000 --> 19:26.000
<v Kate Ellis>Annie Pearl.

190
19:26.000 --> 19:34.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>McCandies.

191
19:34.000 --> 19:35.000
<v Kate Ellis>She's still living?

192
19:35.000 --> 19:36.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Uh huh.

193
19:36.000 --> 19:37.000
<v Kate Ellis>How old is she?

194
19:37.000 --> 19:42.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Oh, she's 50. She's 55.

195
19:42.000 --> 19:50.000
<v Kate Ellis>She was born in 19, so she's like 1939?

196
19:50.000 --> 19:51.000

<v Emily Willette McCandies>Uh huh.

201
20:10.000 --> 20:10.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay.

202
20:10.000 --> 20:12.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>That's all.

203
20:12.000 --> 20:26.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. The only thing I'm debating here is you had brothers and sister, I mean, officially they're cousins, but they were like brothers and sisters to you.

204
20:26.000 --> 20:28.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Right.

205
20:28.000 --> 20:34.000
<v Kate Ellis>I know what I'll do. Let me just do this. I just want to make it clear that these are the parents that you were raised by.

206
20:34.000 --> 21:43.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Right.

207
21:43.000 --> 21:50.000

<v Emily Willette McCandies>Uh huh.

223
23:02.000 --> 23:04.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. That's it for children, right?

224
23:04.000 --> 23:05.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Right.

225
23:05.000 --> 23:09.000
<v Kate Ellis>Oh, grandchildren, you've got how many grandchildren?

<v Emily Willette McCandies>You want my oldest son's children first?

231
23:19.000 --> 23:22.000
<v Kate Ellis>They actually don't ask for that. They just want to know how many you have.

232
23:22.000 --> 23:23.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>I have six.

233
23:23.000 --> 23:25.000
<v Kate Ellis>How many does Dwight have? The oldest one.

25:07.000 --> 25:08.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Orange.

263
25:08.000 --> 25:22.000
<v Kate Ellis>All right. From 1941 to, there was a period when you moved to your brother's?

264
25:22.000 --> 25:24.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Yeah.

265
25:24.000 --> 25:25.000

<v Emily Willette McCandies>I think it was in 56. Yeah, it was in 1956.

267
25:37.000 --> 25:37.000

281
27:01.000 --> 27:04.000
<v Kate Ellis>Called?

283
27:10.000 --> 27:12.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay, so it's not in Hillsborough?

284
27:12.000 --> 27:17.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Well, it's between where I live now and the town of Hillsborough.

285
27:17.000 --> 27:19.000
<v Kate Ellis>Can we call it Hillsborough?

286
27:19.000 --> 27:28.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>It's still Hillsborough. Right.

287
27:28.000 --> 27:32.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. That was from 1941 to 1943. Does that sound right?

288
27:32.000 --> 27:32.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Right.

289
27:32.000 --> 27:41.000

27:41.000 --> 27:45.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Right.

291
27:45.000 --> 27:48.000

301
29:04.000 --> 29:05.000

<v Emily Willette McCandies>I mean 1975.

303
29:07.000 --> 29:26.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. To present. Then, is this again, list the most important jobs before this job. You don't have to list all of the jobs if they didn't seem that important to you. What was the job before housekeeper?

<v Emily Willette McCandies>That was in the early sixties.

341
31:51.000 --> 31:52.000
<v Kate Ellis>Early sixties.

342
31:52.000 --> 31:56.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Mm-hmm.

343
31:56.000 --> 32:11.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. Any other job that was important to you or that sort of stands out as—

344
32:11.000 --> 32:26.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>I worked with a private patient in his home in Chapel Hill. That was somewhere in the late sixties.

345
32:26.000 --> 32:27.000
<v Kate Ellis>Private patient.

346
32:27.000 --> 32:30.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Mm-hmm.

347
32:30.000 --> 32:31.000
<v Kate Ellis>That was in, I'm sorry, you were at Chapel Hill?

348
32:31.000 --> 32:36.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>That was Chapel Hill.

349
32:36.000 --> 32:50.000
<v Kate Ellis>Late sixties. That was, you were a nurse, what were you?

350
32:50.000 --> 32:54.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>At the time I was in training of being a physical therapist aide.

351
32:54.000 --> 32:56.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay, so an aide to that patient?

352
32:56.000 --> 32:58.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Right.

353
32:58.000 --> 33:01.000
<v Kate Ellis>Can I say nursing aid to private patients? Does that sound right?

354
33:01.000 --> 33:05.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Right.

355
33:05.000 --> 33:16.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. Great. Have you ever received any awards or honors or held any offices?

356
33:16.000 --> 33:21.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>No, I haven't.

357
33:21.000 --> 33:24.000
<v Kate Ellis>What is your religious denomination?

358
33:24.000 --> 33:29.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Baptist.

359
33:29.000 --> 33:33.000
<v Kate Ellis>Your current church affiliation? The name of your church?

360
33:33.000 --> 33:35.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Lipscomb Grove.

361
33:35.000 --> 33:36.000
<v Kate Ellis>How do you spell that?

362
33:36.000 --> 33:40.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>L-I-P-S-C-O-M-B.

363
33:40.000 --> 34:01.000
<v Kate Ellis>Grove Baptist Church. What are the names of the other churches that you belong to?

364
34:01.000 --> 34:07.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Flat Rock AME Church, Methodist Church.

365
34:07.000 --> 34:12.000
<v Kate Ellis>It's called Flat Rock AME? AME Methodist Church or A?

366
34:12.000 --> 34:19.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>AME Methodist.

367
34:19.000 --> 34:19.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay.

368
34:19.000 --> 34:24.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>The little school that I first went to was named after this church.

369
34:24.000 --> 34:29.000
<v Kate Ellis>Oh, I see. Okay. What town was that in?

370
34:29.000 --> 34:42.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Still Hillsborough.

371
34:42.000 --> 34:45.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. What about the Primitive Baptist?

372
34:45.000 --> 34:52.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Yeah, that was my family church. I attended there too.

373
34:52.000 --> 35:01.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. What was the name of that again?

374
35:01.000 --> 35:01.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>White Oak Grove.

375
35:01.000 --> 35:02.000
<v Kate Ellis>White Oak Grove.

376
35:02.000 --> 35:10.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Primitive Baptist.

377
35:10.000 --> 35:10.000
<v Kate Ellis>Church.

378
35:10.000 --> 35:12.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Mm-hmm.

379
35:12.000 --> 35:12.000
<v Kate Ellis>That was in?

380
35:12.000 --> 35:28.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Cedar Grove.

381
35:28.000 --> 35:39.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. Are there any organizations that you belong to, like civic organizations or community or political or educational organizations that you belong to?

382
35:39.000 --> 35:47.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>No, not in.

383
35:47.000 --> 36:03.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. Do you have any other activities or affiliations, like any particular hobbies or things that you do or groups that you're associated with?

384
36:03.000 --> 36:04.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Not now.

385
36:04.000 --> 36:15.000
<v Kate Ellis>There wasn't one? Was there something in the past that just made you think of?

386
36:15.000 --> 36:18.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>No, not really. Not long enough to say.

387
36:18.000 --> 36:20.000
<v Kate Ellis>Nothing that really stands out.

388
36:20.000 --> 36:23.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Huh uh.

389
36:23.000 --> 36:43.000
<v Kate Ellis>Finally, is there any comment that you would like to make? A favorite saying or a phrase or a quote? If you don't have one, that's fine, but if there's something that you like to say or?

390
36:43.000 --> 36:45.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>You mean concerning what we've been over?

391
36:45.000 --> 37:02.000
<v Kate Ellis>Yeah, or anything that you think is important. Either concerning what we've been over, or just something that you believe about life or that you think about.

392
37:02.000 --> 37:13.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>I think this is interesting in what we are doing.

393
37:13.000 --> 37:14.000
<v Kate Ellis>Go ahead.

394
37:14.000 --> 37:50.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>What we are going over with now, and maybe one day my grandchildren can read this. I'm sorry.

395
37:50.000 --> 37:59.000
<v Kate Ellis>Is there anything you would want your grandchildren to know about anything I've asked you that—

396
37:59.000 --> 38:18.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>I wish I knew more now about my grandparents, because they have often asked me about my parents and my grandparents.

397
38:18.000 --> 38:19.000
<v Kate Ellis>Because your grandchildren have asked you?

398
38:19.000 --> 38:38.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Yes.

399
38:38.000 --> 38:40.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay.

400
38:40.000 --> 39:19.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>If ever I be interviewed again, I hope I'll have more information concerning my grandparents.

401
39:19.000 --> 39:48.000
<v Kate Ellis>Okay. Now this is the release form. This is different. This is for photographs. Sometimes we ask people if they have old photographs from when they were growing up or even of their ancestors, their grandparents, or your biological parents, or the parents that raised you. Since I'm not at your house, we didn't have a chance to look at anything like that.

402
39:48.000 --> 39:51.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Well, I can show it to you who we get out to my house.

403
39:51.000 --> 39:53.000
<v Kate Ellis>You do have photographs?

404
39:53.000 --> 40:02.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>I don't have any photographs of my real parents, but I do of my aunt and uncle that raised me.

405
40:02.000 --> 40:39.000
<v Kate Ellis>Oh really? Okay, great. I'm going to put this aside just because you haven't loaned me or shown me anything. Okay. Then this is the interview agreement. Let me just put my name. Would you read, this is what the agreement part of it? Would you read this or?

406
40:39.000 --> 40:49.000
<v Emily Willette McCandies>Yes, I will.
