I don't think you can just look at a person and say, "Well, that's a typical Duke student." The truth of the matter is that our students come from all over. We nourish the spirit of diversity and our students reflect that diversity. Now, they have a lot of things in common. They are good students, they're good scholars. They know how to enjoy life. All of those traits might mark a student, but I don't think there's such a thing as a typical Duke student. - I was hoping to come here and become an incredible Southern belle, but I don't think it's working. (laughs) - I came here and it was a day much like this, and I fell in love with it. And I'm still in love with it. - This is what I like most about Duke, I mean, look, see these women, (laughs) this is definitely what I like most about Duke. I hate going to class, that's what I don't like, but I know it's necessary, so. - Yeah, I like Duke a lot. It's a good time. - Duke is a great place with a lotta great minds to be picked. (calm relaxing music) - I think having a good time is part of the college experience, not to the exclusion of the academic pursuits, but certainly along with it. And there's no reason that having a good academic experience isn't in itself a good time. - I think the academic pressure pretty much comes from what you put on yourself and what you expect out of yourself. - The thing that I enjoy most in life and the thing that I enjoy most about Duke is teaching. It's working with these really remarkably alive students who are, I think, particularly eager for good things to happen in their lives. (laughs) - No, I hadn't. I felt like as you're walking by you're being undressed by everybody of both sexes. In fact, it's all was uncomfortable. - Our benches are used primarily for sitting, relaxing, and girl watching. - Friends of mine were here from Washington recently and I was telling them that we bench dance here, and they thought it was really weird. And it's really been a lot of fun and we wish we weren't graduating so we could come here for three more years. - I've been here, like, every night, except for four, since it's opened up. In fact, I brought my sleeping bag, if you can see it, it's over there, with my pillow and my contact lens stuff. - Ever since they opened that afternoon, people go to Uncle Harry's and then back here, and then back to Uncle Harry's again. - This is college, this is the way college should be. (upbeat drum music) Cheerleaders: D-U-K-E. (upbeat music) (audience cheering) D-U-K-E. (audience cheering) (audience cheering) - Athletics is no more important to me than any other department on this campus, but it is more visible. And I think that visibility, and I've said this so many times before, requires a certain sense of responsibility and a certain amount of excellence. It is not the answer to being a great university, but it's a part of the puzzle. (upbeat drum music) (upbeat music) (audience claps and cheers) - Today, it is a gorgeous day and we're psyched to get drunk, blow off classes, and also we're seniors so we don't give a (beep) anymore. - Yay! - It's scary. (calm upbeat music) I don't know what I'm doing next year. - Most Duke students are pretty confident, we have a pretty good reputations. You know, being a really good school, a hot school, the only school that gets on the cover of "New York Times." Interviewer: Would you like to be a corporate executive? - Of course, I'm shooting for the top. I mean, I start out from, you know, the managerial positions and then I go for the top, I go for the top guy. I mean, Lee Iacocca there, he started, I'm starting, we're there. - It's a crime that we're getting a diploma for having so much fun.
