Narrator: How do you get to the top of your field? Home Savings asked the first lady of the theater, Helen Hayes. 

- I think it takes more stamina and tenacity to be an actor than anything else I can think of. You need real courage, almost full heartiness to go out and face the unknown in every new audience. But you do need the audience. You can't judge your performance by instinct alone. You have to have somebody looking at you. You can rehearse without an audience, but you can't perform without one. That's why I was never comfortable in movies or television. I always felt I was pressing. It was so easy. I felt so at home when I walked on a stage. It didn't matter if I was ill. It didn't matter if I had bronchitis. It didn't matter if I was exhausted. I'd walk on the stage and that audience was there and I was well again.
