- From what I've heard from seniors this year they feel as though the students that have entered Duke over the last two years, as opposed to the students that entered when they were coming to Duke are very different. Their attitudes are very different, their expectations are completely different. Students entering Duke now really feel as though they have a number of rights when they enter Duke. And instead of being vague and beating around the bush, I will basically say that students feel that if they need to study in their dorm rooms then they should have that right at any time of the day on any day of the week. And I think this has evolved over time, but I think that, for instance, our noise policy has really responded to that change in student attitude, to that change in the way students perceive their rights to be. I do feel a certain level of resentment from the upper-class students. I think the senior students in particular feel as though they've worked through four years of being here, they have been able to resolve these issues as a residential community, and now an outside force, be it a committee, be it the faculty, be it the administration, has come in and has presented them with a policy and said, "This is the way it's going to be." - No way. Absolutely no way that coach Wilson should have been fired. 

- Winning is important. Those who don't understand that don't understand me. But it is incredible to believe based on wins and losses only, that I would not extend coach Wilson's contract after back-to-back winning seasons, when in fact I did extend his contract two years earlier when he was 4-17-1. (cheerful orchestral music) 

- Well, I think from a coaching standpoint, when you evaluate Duke, particularly as a new coach, as a new staff, like we have the forte of our recruiting, the focal point is the academic school itself. Duke is highly regarded as an academic institution. People enjoy the school. It's a very beautiful campus. The atmosphere on the campus is excellent. People that leave here like to come back and visit. So I feel like our focal point for recruiting in athletics is the school itself. The opportunity to get a Duke education. In the future, it's always hard to visualize the future, but we want to recruit good students who are good players and try to build a championship football program at Duke on good students who are good athletes, who have good goals and objectives. 

- Well, in a way, it was almost like being a senior at Duke University myself. It was the fourth year I've been here. And our first real recruited group of players won't be seniors until next year, but this was the fourth season I coached here at Duke, and I felt very very good about the way the program was going. The first year we were here was a 500 season, a little over 10 and seven, and then over the next three years we've climbed a little better each year to the point where now we've won two out of the last three ACC Championships and we've been in the NCAA three years in a row. And this year obviously was our best year. Once we got into the tournament going all the way to the Championship game and losing it in overtimes. ("Symphony No. 1") (tense orchestral music) (cheerful orchestral music) 

- A lot of these battles went on in the late '60s and early '70s, and now you can if you want, collect money for funds, you can have weirdo speakers like me come to Duke, which I wouldn't have been able 12 years ago. You can play a role in choosing elective courses. You can wear your hair long, short, green, blue, pink. You can stick erasers in your ear, or under your cheeks or anything like that. You can screw in your dorms. (audience laughing) You can wear a bra or not wear a bra even if you're a guy. (audience laughing) I mean, all these student rights and freedoms were won because your predecessors took chances. If you're thinking of keeping your nose clean, if you're thinking of studying real hard so you can get out and get the big job, so you can get out and really sell out, the sale, my friends, is over. There ain't no jobs out there. If you wanna live in a better society you gotta go out and create that society, and you gotta begin to do it right here and now today. (audience clapping) 

- It's wonderful to be here at long last at Duke University. I've been trying to get here for some time and I wanna thank you for inviting me to Duke on your... (audience clapping) 
Thank you very much. I've always wanted to see Duke University, right? I've heard so much about Duke. You've got such a reputation, you know. You say to people, "I'm going to Duke University," they go, "Whoa, yeah?" (audience laughing) "Wow, man! Hey, have a good time." you know. (audience laughing) Hey man, everybody, you know, my agents, everybody. Meet people in the street, "You're going to Duke. Oh!" (audience laughing) "Duke's heavy." (audience laughing) Now just recently, you probably heard a whole bunch of rumpus going on on Broadway. It's because they brought us a new show from England called "Cats". And, 
(audience clapping) we do hope you like this rendition of one of the songs. Thank you. - In the time I've been at Duke I've noticed a lot of changes that I really haven't liked. Basically, you know, I came to Duke... One of the best things about the school is that it was a good academic school, but people weren't afraid to play and have a good time. And now the administration seems to think that this one, they wanna make this a pure Ivy where you just come here and you study all the time, and you can't have bands on the Quad. So they put in a new noise policy and you can't turn your speakers out, you go outside and play Frisbee. And, you know, what do you want? You know, people just hanging out and be pre-meds the whole time? I mean, I'm an RA in a freshman dorm, and I noticed that this year's freshmen compared to when we were freshmen, are just totally neurotic about the schoolwork and they take it far too seriously. And if the whole school becomes that way this place can get really boring. I just feel like the Missions office should be more concerned about people who can contribute to the school, make it a fun place to be and a more active and interesting place and less of just an academic hole. I mean, academics are great, but you know you can't live your life working for a multinational and just thinking about economic reports and statistical analysis. Man: We've never had as young a team playing so it was really a year of teaching and development. I think it's gonna be a good base for us for the next few years. (cheerful orchestral music)

- Duke's changed... I think Duke changes more in a student's mind as he finishes his four years your perspective changes but there are some things, rules and regulations have become tighter, there's less noise on the Quad, we don't have the big Quad parties and bands on the Friday afternoons, October and Spring Fest. But overall, I think that Duke students, you think it changes a little more because, you know, you're changing, you're developing and by your four years you're just ready to get out of here. So I don't think it changes that much but some things have gotten stricter but it's still a great place to go to school. (playful piano music) ♪ Still don't know ♪ ♪ What I was waitin' for ♪

- And I think that's our answer that you're here to get the best possible broad, in a technical sense, the technical definition of the liberal education. And if we do that and if we commit ourselves to the liberal education, then we've made Duke what I think it ought to be. And I think it can withstand all of the fads and all of the changes if people know how to think and know how to reason, and know how to distinguish right from wrong, or truth from things that are not quite in balance, if they learn the thinking process, that they learn to use our expression, how to think straight, then we've done our job and our students will take care of themselves and might very well take care of society too. - Members of Duke's class of '83, may I ask you to take one quiet moment to look around you, to catch a conscious image of this place and your friends. This is your moment and it is your university. May God bless you for glorious years of compassionate living. (audience cheering)
