Woman: Morning, and welcome to the service of worship at Duke Chapel on this glorious Palm Sunday. For those of you who may be wondering how it is we're organizing our service this morning, we are beginning with an ecumenical blessing of the Palms on the main quantal in front of the Chapel just in about four minutes. At that time, you'll be able to receive your Palm as we listen to the reading of the Gospel and then all will join in processing together during the singing of the hymn back into the Chapel. You are invited to participate in this service, but I did want to explain to you that it will be beginning in about 5 minutes, you're also free to remain in the Chapel if you so desire, because the service will be broadcast inside and you can also hear what is going on outside. Thank you. Man: Good morning and welcome to this service on this Palm Passion Sunday. As Christians, we gather to commemorate and reenact Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. And now, Mary Pat Folkwin from the Catholic Campus Ministry will lead us as we begin. Mary: Dear friends in Christ, for five weeks of lent we have been preparing by works of charity and self sacrifice, for the celebration of our Lord's Paschal mystery. Today we come together, to begin this solemn celebration in union with the whole Church throughout the world. Christ entered in triumph, into his own City, to complete his work as our Messiah. To suffer, to die and to rise again. Let us remember with devotion this entry which began his saving work and follow him with a lively faith. United with him in his suffering on the cross, may we share his resurrection and new life, Amen. Man: Let us pray. If you would hold the branches up high for a moment. Oh mighty God we pray you, bless these branches, and make them Holy. Today we joyfully acclaim Jesus our Messiah and King. May we reach one day the happiness of the new and everlasting Jerusalem, by faithfully following him who lives forever and ever. Amen. Keep them up if you will for a moment. Mary: A reading from the Gospel according to Saint Mathew, "When they had come near Jerusalem "and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, "Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them "go into the village ahead of you, "and immediately you will find a donkey tied, "and a colt with her; untie her and bring them to me. "This took place to fulfill what had been "spoken through the prophet, saying, "'Tell the daughter of Zion, look, "your King is coming to you, humble, "and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, "the foal of the donkey.' "The disciples went and did as Jesus directed them; "they brought the donkey and the colt, "and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. "A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road "and others cut branches from the trees "and spread them on the road. "The crowds that went ahead of him "and followed were shouting 'Hosanna to the Son of David! "Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! "Hosanna in the highest heaven!' "When he entered Jerusalem the whole City was in turmoil, "asking, 'Who is this?'. "The crowds were saying, 'This is the Prophet Jesus', "from Nazareth in Galilee." This is the word of the Lord. Therefore, his name, is exalted above every other name. And at the name of Jesus, every tongue confess, every knee shall bow. We never know what to do with this Sunday. If you are an Anglican, this is for you Palm Sunday, that is what Methodists and Episcopalians know this Sunday as. Palm Sunday, the day when Jesus entered in triumphal procession into Jerusalem. However if you're a Lutheran or a Roman Catholic Christian, you call this the Sunday of the Passion and focus not on palms and joyful parades, but focus instead upon whips and nails and the gathering clouds, which shall break like thunder on Friday over a place of the skull. Is this Palm Sunday? Or the Sunday of the Passion? Do we welcome into Jerusalem the one who is King of Kings, Hosanna, Lord of Lords, or do we note that the one who rides into Jerusalem rides on the back of a donkey. Do we welcome him, as savor and sovereign, or as sufferer and servant? Do we crown him Lord of Lords, King of Kings? Yes we do crown him on Friday. But not with a crown of gold, a crown of thorns. We just don't know exactly what to do with this Sunday, and of course we do not know either what to do with this Jesus on this Sunday or any other. Is he the exalted one on the thorn of heaven, or is he the one who knees before his disciples, basin and towel in hand? The sufferer, the comforter of so many. What shall we do with Jesus? Paul, in speaking about the Christ event, quotes an early Christian hymn. It was our scripture today from Philippians. Christ Jesus, though he was in the form on God, he came down, taking upon himself the likeness of humanity. This Philippians passage is a kind of dance that begins up on high, up there with God, and comes down low to suffering humanity and then rises back up again. Though he was in the form of God, he emptied himself, he took the form of a servant, he become obedient, even obedient unto death on a cross. At Christmas, we celebrated the birth of the baby at Bethlehem. And if you recall there were few who gathered round the manager and said "Look, he's in he form of God!" There evidently was nothing about the babe at Bethlehem, or Jesus the growing child, that made anyone say "Look, he's in the form of God!" But Paul doesn't say he is in the form of God, he said he was in the form of God, he was with God. Was. Was where? Was when? Paul is here in Philippians speaking about Jesus before Bethlehem. Christ before we knew him. He is speaking here about the One who preexisted with God. Jesus was with God before he was with us, preexistence. Hold onto your hats people, we're going to talk about something they did not tell you in Sunday school. The preexistence of Christ. He was with God before he was with us. Preexistence, I've never talked much about this. I've always thought we had enough on our plates. What with what the earthly Jesus said and did without rummaging around in Christian doctrine to find some weird notion like preexistence. It always seemed to me like us Christians had enough to defend as it is, what with Jesus turning water into wine, and walking on water and rising from the dead, we had enough to defend to the modern world without pulling out some strange notion like preexistence. One day, Martin Luther was lecturing to his class and a hand went up in the class and a student asked, "Dr Luther, what was God doing "before God created the world? "If God is enteral and uncreated he must of had "a lot of time of his hands before he created us. "What was he doing?" And an aggravated Martin Luther said, "What was he doing? "He was gathering sticks, "to beat the hell out of people like you "who ask such stupid questions." (people laugh) There's enough going on between us and Jesus without weird speculation, about things like preexistence. And yet, as today's scripture reminds us, preexistence is not some weird, it's a biblical notion, it's a major Christian claim. He was with God before he was with us. And you may know that most of the world's religions speak about preexistence. Preexistence of humanity, many eastern religions teach that we existed before we existed here. Many of the worlds religions are convinced that this world is such a tragic sorrowful place, that there was a time before our time when we existed before. A time in which there was peace and joy, and happiness, we preexisted. "We're in pain now", say these religions, but there was a time when we existed before this time when all was right. Preexistence. Well I dare say, many people in our culture don't worry about such thoughts. After all, we're well fed and well housed, and well futured. For people like us, the world is a generally good place in which to live, oh we have our occasional setbacks. But this world is generally enough for us. We need expect no world before or after. Which I think leaves us with very little to say, to those people, maybe the majority of the world's people, who experience this world as a vail of tears, we have not had to bury a child, due to death by starvation, and so maybe it is easy for us to say give us this world as it is, that's enough. But for the majority of the world's people, such claims are simply the arrogant isolated claims of people who have had too much in a world where most of our brothers and sisters have too little. But for people who know how tragic this world can be, the notion of the preexistence of humanity, has made sense. Because if God is just and loving, then this world is as good as it sometimes is, cannot be all that there is. There was a time, say the Hindus, that was better than this time. We preexisted. Now, the New Testament, attributes preexistence not to human beings, but to Christ. The New Testament does not say that we existed before our birth, but it does say that Jesus did. Preexistence in the Bible is not a notion that tells us anything about humanity, but it tells us a great deal about Jesus. It was what Paul was trying to say to us in quoting this hymn from Philippians. "Jesus Christ, though he was in the form of God "he emptied himself, taking the form of humanity. "Becoming obedient, even unto death." Or it is said in those well known words in the beginning of the Gospel of John, "In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, "the Word Christ, he was with God, "he was God, there was not anything made "that was not made through him, "and the word was with God, the word was God, "and the word became flesh, and dwelt upon us "and we beheld his glory." John's talking preexistence. He was God, before he was with us he was with God. In Colossians, Paul says, "He is in the imagine of the invisible God, "the first born of all creation, "in him was everything created." They're talking preexistence. Christ existed with God, even before Genesis. So this means that when Genesis says God began creating worlds and creatures, Christ was creating with him. Or later when it says that God made a covenant with Abraham to bless all the peoples of the world through Abraham, Christ was blessing with God. Or when the spirit of God inspired the prophets of old to speak about justice and righteousness, Christ was speaking with him. The same one who is our savior is our creator. This world, in all of it's beauty and complexity, and yes, sometimes mystery and misery, this world is Christ's world. And that makes a difference. Sometimes you hear people say in everyday speech when some tragedy has happened in life, "Well, we've just got to accept this. "This is God's will." But if Paul is right, if Christ was busy with God setting up the world when God set up the world, then we might as easily say, "Well, this is Jesus' will." That makes it a little bit harder to say, doesn't it? Jesus, the one who suffered with us, the one who healed the sick, the one who confronted the demons. You know that is is customary for insurance companies when there's been a tornado with destruction or some natural calamity they will say, "This was an act of God." But if Paul is right, if Christ was with God from the beginning, then we might as well say, "This was an act of Christ." And that makes it a little harder to make such a claim. And yet that's what preexistence says. It was Christ, who was there with God from the first, up there, out there, wherever you envision God, and he came to us, he came to us and that makes a difference, the word became flesh, or as Paul says elsewhere, "Though he was rich, "for our sake, he become poor." He emptied himself, to stand beside us. I'm claiming that the preexistence of Christ is not some weird subject fit for episodes of The Twilight Zone or the ruminations of Miss Shirley MacLaine. I'm claiming that it makes a difference, it makes a difference to us. It's interesting that Paul's main references to the preexistence of Christ occur when Paul is in the heat of a congregational squabble. Once, when Paul is trying to get the Christians at Colassae to take up an offering for the poor, and another time in Philippians when he's trying to get the Philippian Church to quit squabbling and start acting like the Church. He refers to preexistence of Christ. Christ was before the beginning, he has created the world. And I think in so doing, Paul was trying to say, "People, this thing between us and Jesus is big." It's a lot bigger than your little life, your little aches and pains. This thing that God is busy doing in Jesus is cosmic. It's beyond time and space. What God was doing in Jesus began long before even the world began, and it shall continue long after we're gone. He is alpha and omega, bringing everything together in him. And when he empties himself, and takes on our human form, and stands beside us, it's God standing beside us. God, the creator of the universe, the one who set the stars and the courses and created the whales. It's God beside us. And that makes a difference. As Paul says, "None of the rulers of this age understood this. "Else wise they wouldn't have crucified the Lord of Glory." And it's hard for us to understand it, too. How are we to understand the great, almighty God, coming down, with us, to be born as we must be born. To suffer as we sometimes suffer, to die as we must. But though we cannot understand it, knowing that God has come and stood beside us makes a difference. We don't understand this, we stand under it. He humbled himself, he took the form of a servant. And became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Furthermore, he didn't just come down and dirty his royal hands a bit in the human condition, stand beside us in empathetic, yet essentially ineffective resignation, no. He returned, to the glory from which he came, having humbled himself taking on the form of flesh he went back and sat down to rule all of creation. God has therefore highly exalted him with a name that is above every other name that at the name of Jesus Christ every knee shall bow, every tongue confess that he is Lord. It makes a difference. This past week I was talking to one of you, did not spend spring break down at the beach, but spent it in the Honduras, working in the Chapel sponsored mission project down there. It was your first confrontation with pervasive, complete, total, unrelenting poverty. And what do you say when you encounter human misery? That can not be alleviated, even by a group of Duke students giving up their spring vacation and going down, and doing some work, it won't be alleviated by that. What can you do about all that heartache and sadness that's still left over after all of the good deeds and righteous works done in the world. What do you say? Well you can say, that the one who entered Jerusalem on this day, bouncing on the back of a donkey, the one who was forsaken by his own people, stripped naked, beaten, and hung up on a cross to die, that this one now rules. The one who knows what it's like to be human at all of it's depths, is the one who went back and scaled the heights of God. And that makes a difference. Or is it more significant that the one who rules is the one who suffered? Or that the one who suffered is now the one who rules? We don't know what to do. That the one who sits on the throne is also the one who hung on a cross. Should we crown him Lord of Lords, King of Kings? Or should we welcome him as friend and fellow sufferer? Is this Palm Sunday? Or are we getting ready to celebrate Passion Sunday? We just never know what to do with Jesus. But the good news is, he knows what to do with us. In the beginning was the word, and the word was God, and the word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory.
