Even this year, the football crowd has been a lot better than years past and we just get a lot of support from the students and the crowd and that helps us. It's been a fantastic year. - And although you and I won't be here next year, we hope you will continue to support and do basketball because it's a class act and it's a class school and, as far as I'm concerned, it's the best place in the country to be. (crowd cheering) (piano music) - I would hope that people would look at student action week and see that a small group of people can put together a fairly impressive range of speakers and events and get help from the whole university community from the union, the (indistinct), Chronicle, et cetera. (piano music) - One of the reasons that we did the week was because people asked the question or pointed out that there wasn't anything worthwhile caring about. Nowadays, in the 1980s, all the major problems had been solved by the civil rights movement or whatever and one of the things about student action week was that we pointed out the, I think the major problem we have nowadays, in 1988 is there were too many things to worry about which makes it, I was so frightening that you won't actually be able to concentrate on anything. (piano music) - There's a lot of folks who have this basic rap about students in college today, is that you're pretty much caught up in yourselves and your own lives and your own friends, that you don't care about what's going on beyond that. And I think that you all being here today is a statement that that's not true. - And it's not true, it's told to us, over and over, that it doesn't matter, it doesn't make any difference. It does make a difference, everything makes a difference. - The solutions aren't easily to come by, but they nearly always demand that each of us, in his own way according to his or her own interests, have something to say about them. If we decide that George Bush, Michael Dukakis and Jesse Jackson alone are going to solve these problems, It'd never be solved, but if we take it upon ourselves to do something about it, then the solutions become a little clearer. (piano music) - They just act on what you think you can do because you can, it's amazing. (piano music) - Why, in my heart, I feel this is important is because I love this university. I want to see it shine. (people cheering) (piano music) - It's something to talk about, all the things we talked about tonight and you can tell by now, with me, it is not a very easy subject to deal with. I just wanna ask you, instead of just talking about it, let's act for change, okay? Put yourself in that other person's position before you make a judgment, before you assume anything, that's all I'm asking. - What about integration on campus and interaction between the two groups? How do you think you can do anything about that? - Well, I don't think things like that can be forced. I think it has, it's only going to be quality interaction. If it is, a natural thing if it just happens in a friendships form, I don't really think there's anything you can do to force stuff like that. - I'm not so sure I believe in the concept of, oh wow, this is a campus problem, let's solve it because I feel like, as far as race relations are concerned, a lot of it does come with individual relationships. And those are a lot more difficult to foster simply because you can't force people to be open-minded. You can't force people to begin to understand people that are different than they are. - And I think everyone wants to interrelate, but it's just some sort of barrier there. (helicopter whirling) (crowd cheering) (trumpet music playing) - Well, that's why we're here. Now, I've heard critics say employers have no business looking for drug abuse in the workplace, but when you pin the critics down, too often they seem to be among that handful who still believe that drug abuse is a victimless- - Your presence here today sends a clear message to all about the importance your administration places on generating greater and more effective efforts to prevent substance abuse wherever it occurs in our society. On behalf of Duke University, I now declare you an honorary Blue Devil and present to you a token of our appreciation. (crowd cheering) (trumpet playing) - What do you think about what the president said today about drug abuse? Do you think mandatory testing is the answer? - I don't think mandatory testing is the answer, but I think corporations do have, I mean private corporations have rights to make restrictions on their employees if they want to, I think. - Do you think mandatory testing is a good idea? - Yes, definitely. - In all professions or just certain professions like military? - I feel, especially in all professions that any kind of security is involved. Police department, nuclear power. - They can test me whenever they want. - It was interesting to have a president come, I guess. - He said he wanted to come to the game yesterday, but couldn't get tickets. - Uh huh. - Yeah, so- - What do you think of mandatory drug testing? - I think it's good in a public workplace, I think is very good. (crowd chanting) (crowd chanting continues) - Ronald's here, Mr. Reagan, president Reagan. He's doing a good thing, trying to get American free from drugs and here these people are protesting something that has nothing to do with that whatsoever. - The issue today was drug abuse in the workplace and that's what the president came here to speak about. And they're not here to worry about who the conscious are, what they're dealing with and all that. It's just, what's going on in the United States with drug abuse in the workplace here. (crowd laughing and cheering) One of the things that has always distinguished this country from most others is that we've always come back to challenging ourselves to do better. We have always been willing to reinvent ourselves for the common good. This is the true glory of America. (crowd laughing and cheering) Duke has been a wonderful place in which to grow up. How could anyone not love it here? Ours is a world-class university. We have outstanding scholars and teachers. We have gifted and well-rounded students. We have the most beautiful campus in the country. Duke should have the confidence to plan for its own future. We must let Duke be Duke and not someone else's idea of what a college should be.
