- It is an environment in which we can provide safe and humane treatment for the detainees who are, who are there. However I do see going forward that we're going to have to find new ways forward. And when I worked at Guantanamo, I wished passionately and there were others there that I worked with, and when we would have time for conversations outside of work, we would discuss this. I really wish that from early on there had been a program of de- and counter-radicalization because it became clear that many of these individuals were going to be going home at some point, and we should have recognized that more openly upfront. In addition to that, we were often interrogating detainees who had been in leadership positions. Granted, some of those leadership positions may have involved training others to build bombs, but these were individuals who were smart and capable as human beings. And the human capacity that I encountered there in the intelligence of some of the detainees in their self-discipline and their hard work, if there would only be a way to help channel that human capacity into positive things. Especially as these detainees some have already gone home and more will go home, I wish we would have more of an eye to that.
