Blue sky, sunny day, February 7th. What more could you ask for? This is college, this is Duke right here. (upbeat music) - If I could describe Duke in just one word. I guess it would have to be... Duke, maybe. - I think if I had to describe Duke in just a number of sentences, I, I would find difficulty doing that. - One word that describes Duke. Southern. - Opportunity. - Indeed, it is difficult to put Duke in just a few sentences, I think this campus, this community, this career that we have for four years, can't be stated in the matter of sentences. - Insane. - Duke is an Island. - To me, Duke has definitely been an experience of learning much more than just my classes and what I do through my books and professors. I've gone through a period where I've had to learn more about myself in these past two years I've ever thought possible. - I think it's an ongoing chapter of our lives that we add to each week, each day, and to just give you one sentence or a few sentences of that would be completely inaccurate. It certainly wouldn't convey the entire experience. Thank you. I think one of the great things about America is that every child has the opportunity to do better than their parents. ♪ It's easy as 123 ♪ ♪ As simple as do re mi, A B C, 1 2 3 ♪ ♪ Baby, you and me, girl ♪ - Well, it strikes me that a Duke college education has several reasons for it. I think, first of all, it's to teach Duke students how to think. Like, if I can work with a student to have them, sort of, develop a way of thinking, learning how to approach inquiry. I think that's the talent and the skill that goes on and you keep that for the whole rest of your life. Man: We have some very intellectual people here and I feel that the vision for Duke is very much alive. What I love most about it, is people have genuine desire to get to know each other. People of opposing viewpoints coming together in a truly intellectual spirit. ("Help" by The Beatles) ♪ Help, I need somebody ♪ ♪ Help, not just anybody ♪ ♪ Help, you know I need someone ♪ ♪ Help ♪ Man: My academic experience so far could probably be summed up in my first UWC paper that I wrote, which is entitled Beavis and Butthead as antichrists. Man: You can work hard and play hard at the same time. There's enough of a balance here where you can have an active social life and still take part in activities and just really, you know, do what you wanna do and branch out and explore. Woman: I've had the best professors, like, it's really been a treat. I've had so much opportunity to work with just really bright people and my classes are genuinely interesting. I really think that the academics here are wonderful and if you work hard enough, you can find, like, a good time no matter where you go. (upbeat music) - The reason for teaching in general is to, sort of, challenge people to think about issues, to think about inquiry, to think about how to learn. So I think it's at this unique point that I find it most interesting and most challenging to help people in their thinking process because they're not only growing in intellectual content, but they're also making decisions that are going to impact them the rest of their lives. And, so to raise questions with them about that and, to me, it's the most interesting aspect of teaching. - (singing) Our president was Thomas Jefferson, he made a deal with Napoleon, [Inaudible 00:08:02] to sell a mile or two, or three, or a hundred, or a thousand, and so in 1807, Louisi and a territory was sold to us without a fuss and gave us lots of elbow room. (clapping) - I think I like the diversity, combination of diversity and the feeling there's other people here. Being from the South, I've had a chance for the first time in my life, I guess, to meet people from a variety of regions and countries and just across the United States. And it's really helped me to vary my perspective on life. - Welcome to Diwali, 1993. And we're so glad that we can share our Indian culture with Duke, and we hope everyone has a great time tonight and enjoys Diwali. - Good stuff. - First time I've ever had Indian food. - I don't know what the green stuff is, but it's really good. Man: The thing I think I'm gonna miss most about being in Duke is, I mean, tests and everything are kind of stressful but it's nothing compared to the real world and I think I'll miss just being with all my friends without many worries. (upbeat music) - I guess, if you had to ask me what I really like about Duke or what's been the most important thing, I guess it's opportunity, chance to do things, to experience different things, to be a Cameron Crazie, to work with a lot of different people, to meet people from different backgrounds, different places, do different things. You should just try everything. Woman: When you look back in your college career, you wanna be able to say that you've accomplished something. Even if it's not tangible, I think is really important. There's just too much out there for you as a student to tap into and I highly recommend getting involved. (upbeat music) (intense music) Man: The best part of the Duke basketball has gotta be being part of the Cameron Crazies. That's a hell of a lot of fun. I do it every night, all night. It's just wild and crazy, it's just indescribable. And I'm very excited to get outta here. I'm very tied of Duke, I'm very tired of school, and I'm very tired of studying. The real world is for me. I'm looking forward to leaving. I've had great memories but it's time to go. - When graduation rolls around, what I'll miss the most, are like little things like looking at the chapel as the sun's about to set. - Being able to live with friends, living in their dorm, you know, going down, you know, the hallway and being like, hey, what's up? You know, and like, friends coming by. Woman: I'm gonna miss living in a dorm cause if I lived in an apartment at grad school, I'm gonna be by myself. Man: I'd say I'm gonna have to miss probably the people the most. Woman: Friends, roommates, friends are the best thing at Duke. Man: I'm gonna miss Burger King when I graduate. Woman: The cheese sticks at the rad, those were pretty good, I don't know if those can be duplicated anywhere else. Man: The Southern hospitality. The campus, the campus is one of the most gorgeous places I've ever been. The squirrels, the chapel. Man: My friends, friends I made here freshman year. I mean, there's so many memories here that we're gonna be able to miss. (calming music) - Let me tell you how I feel about graduation. (laughing) Actually, I'm pretty excited. I think I've run my time here at Duke University and I'm ready to move on. Not that I know what I'm doing, but I'm ready to move on. - I'm numb. I'm exuberant to get the heck out of here and I'm really depressed cause I'm leaving all of my friends. So, kind of a mixture of happiness and sadness and depression and all that kind of thing. - Well, it's relieving and it's frustrating, so. - Cause none of us know where we're going. Or what we're doing, but we enjoy it. - It's kind of a big relief. - Little scary. - Little scary at times, we don't know what's going on in our future. Taking it easily, one step at a time. - I feel very excited. I'm sad to leave my friends, but I'm ready to move on to other things, but it's been a great four years. - I'm pretty happy. I've spent a good four years here and I've met a lot of interesting people and done a lot of interesting things and activities. And it's been a good four years and it's a time to move on. - I think that the last few years were very educational and I met a lot of friends, that's probably the best thing I'll remember about college.
